Who's behind the BuckyMedia team?
BuckyMedia is built by a team of three — or, more accurately, a family: one feline boss and his two humans, who handle the programming and the artwork.
BuckyMedia isn't open source. Its code is, for the most part, handwritten by hand; AI tools were used mainly to help resolve specific bugs, largely because the team doesn't have the budget for a paid AI subscription. The artwork throughout the app is hand-drawn as well. Keeping the source closed for now is a deliberate choice: it lets the team put in the personal work needed to earn the support the community gives them.
That said, open-sourcing BuckyMedia in the coming years, as a gift back to the community, is something the team is genuinely considering. For now, the goal is to earn that support first — the team loves this project, and loves knowing it's useful to other people.
Which websites are supported?
BuckyMedia's downloader works with hundreds of sites. Here are twenty of the most popular:
- YouTube
- Vimeo
- Twitch
- TikTok
- X / Twitter
- SoundCloud
- Dailymotion
- Bilibili
- Niconico
- Bandcamp
- Streamable
- Rumble
- VK
- Crunchyroll
- Vimeo Pro
- Tumblr
Beyond this list, hundreds more sites are supported. If a site you use isn't working, request it — the team is glad to look into adding support for it.
Does BuckyMedia cost anything, or charge for any feature?
No. Every single feature in BuckyMedia is free, and it will stay that way. As BuckyDevelopaws puts it in the app's Patreon window:
"BuckyMedia and all of its features are completely free, and they will stay that way. I, BuckyDevelopaws, owner and feline boss, have ordered that this app never cost you a cent. But if you enjoy it, you can support us with a voluntary tip to buy my favorite treats. A well-fed boss is a happy boss! 🐾"
Since nothing in BuckyMedia is ever paywalled, the team says thank you a different way: supporters get access to new hand-illustrated backgrounds and theme colors, drawn by the team specifically for the app. You can find every way to support the project on the Support page.
What kind of content should I download?
To stay on the right side of the law, only download videos and content distributed under a Creative Commons license, or content you otherwise have clear rights to. Material under other licenses is not meant to be downloaded this way, and doing so may infringe on someone's copyright.
BuckyMedia is a tool, and like any tool, what it's used for is up to the person using it. The team does not support or take responsibility for downloading copyrighted or otherwise protected content, and trusts users to use every BuckyMedia app legally and responsibly.
What operating systems can run BuckyMedia?
Right now, BuckyMedia runs on Windows only. Support for macOS and Linux is already in progress.
Which addons can I install in the movie catalog?
BuckyMedia's catalog is compatible with every addon built on the Stremio protocol, and you're free to install whichever ones you like. That said, please choose addons that don't infringe on copyright or redistribute protected content. A good example of a solid, low-risk choice is an addon that simply tells you which official platforms — Netflix, Disney+, Amazon, HBO, and so on — carry a given title.
BuckyMedia does not monitor which addons any user has installed, as a matter of absolute user privacy. Add the addons you want, and enjoy the catalog.
How can I support BuckyMedia?
If you enjoy the app, you're welcome to support the team with a voluntary tip through the links on BuckyDevelopaws' page. Our small team and family greatly appreciate your support.
What features are coming next?
BuckyMedia is still a young app, so there's a lot of room left to grow. The team is always listening to feature requests from users, and upcoming features will be announced through our Discord server and subreddit, both currently under construction.
